Policies for September 1, 2021 - December 31, 2021
As we prepare to operate at full capacity with American Mariachi (beginning September 18), we implement the following protocols developed in consultation with expert public health guidance and in alignment with Chicago’s performing arts sector. We encourage you to confirm current protocols prior to your performance; all policies, including ticketing and attendance, are subject to change based on evolving guidance from the City of Chicago, the State of Illinois and the CDC. As this guidance is rapidly evolving, so may our protocols. Full refunds will be made available to any parties wishing to cancel their tickets for any reason.
We anticipate maintaining these protocols through December 31, 2021 (or until such time that prevailing medical guidance allows for a relaxation of certain policies).

Beginning September 1, 2021, all guests will need to be fully vaccinated with a FDA authorized vaccine. “Fully vaccinated” means that the performance date must be at least 14 days after receiving the second dose of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine, or at least 14 days after a single-dose vaccine. This vaccine requirement will also apply to Goodman Theatre artists and staff.
Proof of vaccination—displayed either on a smartphone or with a physical copy of the vaccination card—must be presented at time of entry into the theater (along with their performance ticket). Together with the proof of vaccination, all guests 18 years or older must also present a government-issued photo ID. Guests younger than 18 may use a government-issued photo ID or school photo ID. Guests under 12 must be accompanied by an adult who meets the above requirements.
Exceptions will be made for guests who need reasonable accommodations due to a medical exception or a sincerely held religious belief. In those cases, guests must provide proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken within 72 hours of the performance start time, or a negative COVID-19 antigen test taken within 6 hours of the performance start time.
Exceptions will also be made for children under 12, who are accompanied by an adult that meets the above vaccination requirements. For AMERICAN MARIACHI (performing September 18–October 24): Children under 12 will be required to present proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken within 72 hours of the performance start time, or a negative COVID-19 antigen (rapid) test taken within 6 hours of the performance start time.
For subsequent productions, policies regarding children under 12 will be determined based on prevailing medical guidance at the time of the performance. Audiences will be informed of any such testing requirements for children under 12 at least one week prior to their scheduled performance.
For your safety, as well as our artists and staff, Goodman Theatre will not admit any guests who do not provide the documentation as required above.
Regardless of vaccine status, patrons will be required to wear face coverings at all times and in all areas of Goodman Theatre, including while seated during the performance. Patrons arriving without appropriate face coverings will be provided a disposable face mask.
The protocols outlined in this plan allow Goodman Theatre to safely operate at full audience capacity. As such, there will not be physical distancing between parties in the theater.
Goodman Theatre has completely overhauled our air ventilation systems in 2021, implementing a design and build with current best-practices during the COVID era. We have increased our fresh air exchange capabilities while utilizing recommended MERV 13 filters and bipolar ionizers to exceed current recommended levels of air quality and purification.
Sanitization and Surfaces
In addition to enhanced cleaning procedures between every performance, restrooms and other facilities have been converted to touchless systems. Hand sanitizer stations will be available throughout Goodman Theatre.
All patrons understand that there is a risk of exposure to COVID-19 in any public place where people are present. Those purchasing tickets and attending Goodman Theatre productions voluntarily assume all risks related to exposure to COVID-19.
Tickets will be delivered electronically by email. You will self-scan your ticket at a stand upon entering inside the theater. Ushers will be stationed at all doors for assistance.
Concessions will be available in designated areas of the lobby. To help maintain Goodman’s mask policy, concessions will not be allowed in the theater.
Patrons who are not feeling well, are exhibiting any COVID-19 symptoms or have had or been exposed to COVID-19 in the past 14 days, should not come to Goodman Theatre. If you are unable to attend a performance, you are encouraged to contact us to discuss flexible exchange and refund options.
