Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev go head-to-head in Blind Date, a new play by Rogelio Martinez directed by Goodman Theatre Artistic Director Robert Falls. Today, Falls announced his cast for the world-premiere production, which features as characters some of the figures who shaped the political landscapes of the 1980s and beyond: Former U.S. President Ronald Reagan (Rob Riley) and his wife, Nancy (Deanna Dunagan); Former President of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev (William Dick) and his wife, Raisa (Mary Beth Fisher); former U.S. Secretary of State George Shultz (Jim Ortlieb); former Minister of Foreign Affairs for the Soviet Union Eduard Shevardnadze (Steve Pickering); and Reagan biographer Edmund Morris (Thomas J. Cox). The ensemble includes Torrey Hanson, Gregory Linington and Michael Milligan. Blind Date appears January 20 – February 25, 2018.

Rogelio Martinez, Playwright
ROGELIO MARTINEZ (Playwright) was selected as the first ever Mid-Career Fellow at the Lark last year. Recent work includes Wanamaker’s Pursuit (commissioned and produced by the Arden Theater Co.), When Tang Met Laika (Denver Center Theater Company), Fizz (Besch Solinger Productions at the Ohio Theatre and New Theater Miami), All Eyes and Ears (INTAR at Theater Row), Learning Curve (Smith and Krauss New Playwrights: Best Plays of 2005/Besch Solinger Productions at Theater Row), I Regret She’s Made of Sugar (Princess Grace Award), Arrivals and Departures (Summer Play Festival), Union City… (starred Rosie Perez, winner of the James Hammerstein Award) and Displaced (Marin Theater Co.). In addition, Rogelio’s work has been developed and presented at The Public Theater, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Mark Taper Forum, South Coast Repertory and the Magic Theater, among others. Rogelio is an alumnus of New Dramatists and his plays are published by Broadway Play Publishing. He has received commissions from the Atlantic Theater Company, the Arden Theater Company, Denver Center Theater and South Coast Repertory. Rogelio has been profiled in a cover story in American Theater Magazine. He is a member of the Dorothy Strelsin New American Writer’s Group at Primary Stages and the Playwrights Workshop at the Lark. He is writing a film about Yoani Sanchez, a Cuban blogger listed by Time magazine as one of the world’s 100 most influential people. Along with writing, he teaches playwriting at Goddard College, Montclair University and Primary Stages. Rogelio was born in Cuba and arrived in this country in 1980 during the Mariel boatlift. Robert Falls, Director
ROBERT FALLS (Goodman Theatre Artistic Director) The 2016/2017 Season marked Falls’ 30th anniversary as the artistic director of the Goodman in which he directed the world premiere of Jim McGrath’s Pamplona, starring Stacy Keach, and Annie Baker’s adaptation of Uncle Vanya. In the 2015/2016 Season he directed the Chicago premiere of Rebecca Gilman’s Soups, Stews, and Casseroles: 1976, and also partnered with Goodman playwright-in-residence Seth Bockley to direct their world premiere adaptation of Roberto Bolaño’s 2666 (Jeff Award for Best Adaptation). During the 2014/2015 Season, he reprised his critically acclaimed production of The Iceman Cometh at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, directed Rebecca Gilman’s Luna Gale at the Kirk Douglas Theatre in Los Angeles and directed a new production of Mozart’s Don Giovanni for the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Other recent productions include Measure for Measure and the world and off-Broadway premieres of Beth Henley’s The Jacksonian. Among his other credits are The Seagull, King Lear, Desire Under the Elms, John Logan’s Red, Jon Robin Baitz’s Three Hotels, Eric Bogosian’s Talk Radio and Conor McPherson’s Shining City; the world premieres of Richard Nelson’s Frank’s Home, Arthur Miller’s Finishing the Picture (his last play), Eric Bogosian’s Griller, Steve Tesich’s The Speed of Darkness and On the Open Road, John Logan’s Riverview: A Melodrama with Music and Rebecca Gilman’s A True History of the Johnstown Flood, Blue Surge and Dollhouse; the American premiere of Alan Ayckbourn’s House and Garden and the Broadway premiere of Elton John and Tim Rice’s Aida. Falls’ honors for directing include, among others, a Tony Award (Death of a Salesman), a Drama Desk Award (Long Day’s Journey into Night), an Obie Award (subUrbia), a Helen Hayes Award (King Lear) and multiple Jeff Awards (including a 2012 Jeff Award for The Iceman Cometh). For “outstanding contributions to theater,” Falls has also been recognized with such prestigious honors as the Savva Morozov Diamond Award (Moscow Art Theatre), the O’Neill Medallion (Eugene O’Neill Society), the Distinguished Service to the Arts Award (Lawyers for the Creative Arts), the Illinois Arts Council Governor’s Award and, most recently, induction into the Theater Hall of Fame.
