Chicago-based playwright Rohina Malik and director Ann Filmer reunite for the “downtown debut” of Yasmina’s Necklace at Goodman Theatre, beginning October 20 in the Owen Theatre. Malik’s “unique American love story, hilarious yet deeply moving, profound and beautiful” (OakPark.com) explores two disparate Muslim families coming together as their children embark on a romantic relationship.

As previously announced, Susaan Jamshidi leads the nine-member cast as Yasmina—a young Iraqi artist who has hardened herself against the possibility of finding happiness after fleeing to Chicago from her war-torn homeland. But when she meets Sam (Michael Perez), a man with his own emotional setbacks, what had seemed unthinkable becomes tantalizingly real. Joining Jamshidi and Perez are Salar Ardebili (Man), Rom Barkhordar (Musa), Laura Crotte (Sara), Allen Gilmore (Imam Kareem), Martin Hanna (Amir), Amro Salama (Ali) and Frank Sawa (Officer)—Ardebili, Crotte, Jamshidi, Perez and Salama return to the production from the world premiere at 16^th Street Theater. The creative team includes Joe Schermoly (Set) Rachel M. Sypniewski (Costumes), Cat Wilson (Lights) and Barry Bennett (Sound). Winston & Strawn is the Contributing Sponsor for Yasmina’s Necklace.

Download File	Rohina Malik, Playwright ROHINA MALIK (Playwright) returns to Goodman Theatre, where she was a member of the 2011/2012 Playwrights Unit. She is a playwright, actress and solo performance artist, born and raised in London, England, and of South Asian heritage. Her play Yasmina’s Necklace had its world premiere at 16th Street Theater in January 2016, directed by Ann Filmer, and was nominated for a Jeff Award for Best New Play. Yasmina’s Necklace had a second production at Mustard Seed Theater in St. Louis in January 2017. Her play The Mecca Tales, produced by Chicago Dramatists, also received a Jeff Award nomination for Best New Play and will soon receive productions from Voyage Theater Company and Crossroads Theater. Her one-woman play Unveiled was developed and had its world premiere at16th Street Theater, where it received critical acclaim before moving to Victory Gardens Theater, followed by productions across the country. Recently, Unveiled was presented in two South African theater festivals: The Grahamstown Arts Festival and the 969 Festival in Johannesburg. She is a resident playwright at Chicago Dramatists, an artistic associate at 16th Street Theater and Voyage Theater Company and an artistic affiliate at the American Blues Theater. Malik is currently under commission from The Hypocrites and American Blues Theater and a member of the Dramatists Guild of America. Category: Headshots
Download File	Ann Filmer, Director ANN FILMER (Director) returns to Goodman Theatre, where she was the 2004/2005 Season’s Michael Maggio Directing Fellow and previously directed Chicago Boys and David Mamet’s Almost Done, Reunion and Dark Pony as part of The David Mamet One-Act Festival. She has directed over 40 productions in Chicago including Disconnect (Victory Gardens Theater), Eric LaRue (A Red Orchid Theatre), The House of Blue Leaves (Shattered Globe Theatre), In Times of War and Spare Change (Stage Left Theatre), as well as works with Porchlight Music Theatre, Prop Thtr, The Aardvark and Emerald City Theater. She also has directed for Northwestern University, Northern Illinois University, DePaul University, University of Illinois at Chicago, Circle Theatre and the William Inge Theatre Festival in Kansas. Filmer founded 16th Street Theater in 2007, where she has developed and directed the world premieres of Broken Fences, Rohina Malik’s Unveiled, The Scarlet Ibis, Love and Drowning and The Ascension of Carlotta, Menorca and Our Holiday Stories. She recently completed directing her adaptation of Tony Fitzpatrick’s trilogy This Train, Stations Lost and Nickel History: The Nation of Heat at Steppenwolf’s Garage Theatre. She also directed the Jeff Award-nominated Kita y Fernanda, The Beats, Our Dad is in Atlantis, Fires in the Mirror and The Last Barbecue. In 2001, she received an After Dark Award for her direction of The Liquid Moon at Chicago Dramatists. Filmer was the associate artistic director of Writers Theatre in Glencoe for three years and served on the board of the League of Chicago Theatres. While serving as the producing director of Chicago Dramatists from 2000 through 2004, she co-produced the National Showcase of New Plays 2004. She is the editor of New Plays from Chicago, Chicago’s first-ever anthology of new plays, and the creator and artistic director of Chicago’s Estrogen Fest.
