David Cale

David Cale

David Cale most recently collaborated with the Goodman on Floyd and Clea Under the Western Sky during the 2004/2005 Season. He is the author and performer of seven solo shows, five of which have been presented at the Goodman Studio Theatre, including the world premieres of Lillian, Somebody Else’s House and Deep in a Dream of You (the latter two both commissioned by the Goodman), plus Smooch Music and The Redthroats. Other shows include A Likely Story and Betwixt. His solos have been presented throughout the U.S. including Off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizons, the Public Theatre, the New Group, New York Theatre Workshop and Second Stage, and regionally at venues including American Repertory Theatre, Cambridge, the Magic Theatre, San Francisco and the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles.  His monologues have been featured on NPR’s This American Life and The Next Big Thing and the HBO special Bette Midler’s Mondo Beyondo. He wrote and narrated the text for choreographer Charles Moulton’s dance, Chickens, performed by Mikhael Baryshnikov’s White Oak Dance Project. He has written lyrics for songs performed and recorded by artists including Deborah Harry, Elvis Costello, Jimmy Scott, Richard Butler and The Jazz Passengers. He has appeared in plays on and Off-Broadway, and in films including Radio Days, Pollock and The Slaughter Rule.  He is the recipient of two Obie Awards, two Bessie Awards, an NEA Solo Performance Fellowship, two NYFA Fellowships and three ASCAP Songwriting Awards.
