Little grounds us as deeply as shared tradition.
At a moment when the pace of change is dizzying and the gradations can too often seem like shifts from bad to worse, the soul-stabilizing power of “oh, I remember this” is immense. Better still are the moments when we don’t simply remember a cherished memory—we repeat it. Whatever holidays you celebrate, and whether you celebrate with family or found family, there’s no time like this one for that gorgeous grounding to shore us up.
The smell of cinnamon.
Voices raised in shared song.
A widespread sense of generosity toward those most in need.
From the mundane to the magnificent, these tropes of the holidays offer us wholeness. And every time I walk through The Goodman’s lobby and see generations of families finding that balm in our annual production of A Christmas Carol, I feel beyond lucky—and even more grateful—to call this theater home.
God bless us, everyone, indeed.
