The Fellow serves as a full-time member of Goodman’s artistic staff—assistant-directing Main Stage productions, providing producing support, taking part in season planning and new-play development, engaging with Goodman’s various departments (Marketing, Development, Education, Engagement, Business, Production, Communications, etc.) and collaborating with artists across Chicago’s vibrant theatre community.

About the Fellowship

The Northwestern University Directing Fellowship is a newly established, full-time, year-long residency in partnership between Northwestern University’s MFA Directing program and Goodman Theatre. It is intended to give recent Northwestern MFA directing graduates (within ten years of degree completion) hands-on experience embedded within Goodman’s artistic staff.

The Northwestern University Directing Fellow becomes an integral member of Goodman Theatre’s artistic staff for a full calendar year, working side-by-side with the theatre’s leadership and artists. During the fellowship, the Fellow:

  • Engages in new play development by reading and responding to script submissions.
  •  Assists directors on productions in both the Albert and Owen theatres.
  • Curates and produces IDEAA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Accessibility and Anti-Racism) events in collaboration with the Michael Maggio Directing Fellow, helping the Goodman to foster dialogue and collaboration with early career and emerging designers, directors, and theater makers.
  • Participates in season selection, contributing to conversations that shape the theatre’s artistic programming.
  • Develops skills and experience in other areas, working closely with various departments, internally and externally, on on-going projects and special public events.

The Fellow will be intentionally mentored and supervised by the BOLD Artistic Producer and will have opportunities to work with other artistic and administrative leaders. They will have an opportunity to engage each milestone of all productions during their residency while balancing the administrative arm of a large regional theatre’s Artistic Department.

Compensation is $45,000 annually (full-time, exempt) with employee benefits.
