Ted Sperling

Ted Sperling most recently collaborated with the Goodman on The Light in the Piazza during the 2003/2004 Season. He has been working with Adam Guettel since 1993, and was the music director for his musicals Floyd Collins and Saturn Returns, as well as for concerts at Town Hall and Lincoln Center. An arranger, music director, conductor, actor and director, Mr. Sperling comes to the Goodman straight from the Old Globe Theater in San Diego, where he directed a new musical, Striking 12, which he also directed at the Prince Music Theater in Philadelphia. Other directing projects at the Prince include Charlotte: Life? or Theater? (world premiere), Lady in the Dark (starring Andrea Marcovicci) and Peter Pan and Wendy (U.S. premiere). Broadway and off-Broadway credits as music director include The Full Monty (also in London, two U.S. tours and Australia), How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Kiss of the Spider Woman, My Favorite Year, A Man of No Importance, Stephen Sondheim’s Wise Guy (an early version of Bounce), William Finn’s A New Brain, and Romance in Hard Times.  Mr. Sperling has been performing with soprano Audra McDonald for four years, including engagements with symphony orchestras around the country, extended engagements at the Donmar Warehouse in London and Joe’s Pub in New York, and a sold-out debut concert at Carnegie Hall. Their most recent recording is Happy Songs on the Nonesuch label.  Mr. Sperling conducted the world premiere recording of Ragtime and songs for the animated film Anastasia. He made his professional acting debut as bandleader Wallace Hartley in the original Broadway cast of Titanic. This spring marks 23 years of collaboration with Victoria Clark, including three college productions and four Broadway shows.
