Artist Bio
Richard Nelson

Richard Nelson most recently collaborated with the Goodman on Frank’s Home during the 2006/2007 Season. He returns to Goodman Theatre, where his adaptation of Chekhov’s Three Sisters was staged by Robert Falls in 1995. Ten of his plays have been presented by England’s Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) and eight by Playwrights Horizons in New York. Mr. Nelson’s plays include Rodney’s Wife, Franny’s Way (Drama Desk nomination), Madame Melville, Goodnight Children Everywhere (Olivier Award), Where I Come From, The General from America, Kenneth’s First Play (with Colin Chambers), New England, Two Shakespearean Actors (Tony Award nomination), Some Americans Abroad (Olivier Award nomination), Columbus and the Discovery of Japan, Left, Misha’s Party (with Alexander Gelman), Principia Scriptoriae (Time Out Award) and The Vienna Notes (Obie Award). Musicals include James Joyce’s The Dead (with Shaun Davey, Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical, Lucille Lortel Award, New York Drama Critics Circle Award), My Life with Albertine (with Ricky Ian Gordon, Gilman-Gonzalez Award) and the forthcoming Hal Prince musical Paradise Lost. Adaptations include Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard, Tynan (with Colin Chambers), Strindberg’s Miss Julie and The Father, Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People and Pirandello’s Enrico IV. Besides the RSC and Playwrights, his plays have been produced on Broadway, the West End and in theaters across the United States and Europe. His work for television includes Sensibility and Sense and The End of a Sentence (both PBS); for film, Ethan Frome (Miramax); and for radio, numerous plays for the BBC (including two Giles Cooper Awards for Best Radio Play). He is an Honorary Associate Artist of the RSC and the chair of the Playwriting Department of the Yale School of Drama. He was born in Chicago.
