Artist Bio
Ethan McSweeny

Ethan McSweeny most recently collaborated with the Goodman in The Trinity River Plays during the 2010/2011 Season. New York directing credits include the Broadway revival of Gore Vidal’s The Best Man (Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle Awards, Tony Award nomination), the off-Broadway premiere of John Logan’s Never the Sinner (Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Award), and the world premieres of Kate Fodor’s 100 Saints You Should Know and Jason Grote’s 1001—both named among the “Top 10 Plays of 2007” by Entertainment Weekly and Time Out New York. He recently directed an acclaimed production of Dangerous Liaisons for the celebrated Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Canada, and has staged more than 60 productions of new works, musicals and revivals on preeminent stages around the United States, including the Guthrie Theater, The Old Globe, Centerstage, the Shakespeare Theatre Company, Denver Center Theatre Company, the Alley Theatre, Dallas Theater Center, South Coast Repertory, San Jose Repertory Theatre, Pittsburgh Public Theater, Westport Country Playhouse, George Street Playhouse, The Wilma Theater, Primary Stages, Playwrights Horizons and the National Actors Theatre, among others. His work has been recognized by the San Diego Critics Circle, the Ovation Awards, the OCIE Awards and the Minneapolis Star Tribune Awards; and he has received multiple Helen Hayes and Barrymore award nominations and “Best of” recognitions from Baltimore City Paper, the New Jersey Star-Ledger, and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. He currently spends his summers as co-artistic director of the Chautauqua Theatre Company in Western New York, and serves as treasurer of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society. Mr. McSweeny received the first ever undergraduate degree in theater and dramatic arts from Columbia University.
