Artist Bio

Anne Nelson most recently collaborated with the Goodman on The Guys during the 2002/2003 Season. She was born in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and grew up in Lincoln, Nebraska, and Stillwater, Oklahoma. She graduated from Yale University, where she studied US history and politics, and performed in numerous theatrical and musical productions, including The Tempest at the Yale Repertory Theater and the European premiere of Bernstein’s Mass at the Vienna Konzerthaus. Following graduation she entered the field of journalism, reporting on conflicts in El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua and Chile for the Los Angeles Times, Maclean’s Magazine (Canada), the BBC, the CBC, and other news organizations. Her writing on the Philippines won the Livingston Award and the Thomas More Storke Award for international reporting. Her 1986 book, Murder Under Two Flags, was the basis of the feature film Show of Force. Nelson served for four years as the director of the Committee to Protect Journalists. She is currently the director of the international program at the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism. She lives in New York with her husband, writer George Black and their two children, David and Julia. The Guys is her first play. It was published by Random House in August and has been playing off-off-Broadway in New York since December. It has also been performed in Los Angeles at the Actors Gang, at Dublin’s Abbey Theatre, and at the Edinburgh Theatre Festival.
