Family Matters’ mission is simple: to build an equitable society for all. And Goodman Theatre is proud to support this mission by partnering with this impactful organization throughout the run of BUST by Zora Howard (now through May 18).

This grassroots organization was founded in 1987 by families, for families. It started as an initiative to create safe after-school spaces for the community, and has since expanded to encompass education, career training, and community service.

The North of Howard neighborhood in Rogers Park is a diverse community, and home to many refugee and immigrant families. Its population also consists of a disproportionate number of low-wage employees, as well as youth who struggle with learning disabilities. Family Matters is working to close these education and employment gaps.

Here are just a few highlights from their programming:

Partners in Learning is an after-school program that pairs students (grades 1-12) with volunteer tutors. The duos meet up weekly for a mix of academic and real-world educational experiences, from science to the arts to outdoor adventures. Volunteers are not only tutors but also mentors, and the pairs often form long-lasting relationships. Students who participate in this program are more likely to enroll in college, many being the first in their family to attend.

Project RISE brings real-world career training and support to teens (ages 13-18). This year-round initiative ranges in everything from resume building and mock interviews, to leadership development through storytelling, healing, and social justice. Project RISE puts the focus on the individual’s career interests and provides mentorship and guidance to explore a variety of potential pathways. Participants then put the skills they’ve learned into practice though paid internships with local community businesses.

Chicagobility goes beyond the classroom and into a summer full of exploration! This six-week program designed specifically for younger teems (ages 14-15) is made up of several different community service initiatives and activities. Chicagobility is a chance for teens to connect from all over the city and bond over a variety of academic and social interests, including art, cooking, gardening, sports, and more—all while earning a weekly stipend.

In the meantime, head to the Goodman bar before your performance of BUST, and grab yourself a Sweet Home Sidecar (a refreshing peach-infused sidecar made with KOVAL Bourbon, Mathilde’s pêche liqueur, lemon juice, and a peach ring garnish). 10% of all proceeds will be donated to Family Matters.

Cheers to Goodman Bar Manager Mitchell Shaw for creating another cocktail for a good cause!
