15th Annual New Stages Festival

Six New Plays (Three Developmental Productions + Three Staged Readings)

ALL EVENTS ARE FREE: September 19 - October 7, 2018

This fall, Goodman Theatre presents its New Stages Festival—a free annual celebration and discovery of new plays by some of the country’s finest established and emerging playwrights. Audiences experience a first look at seven new works—including three fully staged developmental productions (performed in repertory) There’s Always the Hudson by Paola Lázaro-Muñoz; Felons and Familias by Sandra Delgado; Graveyard Shift by Korde Arrington Tuttle. In addition, four staged readings appear during the last weekend of the festival (October 4-7) including The Wizards by Ricardo Gamboa; Between Covers by Sarah Schulman; Birthday Candles by Noah Haidle; and Cressida on Top by Paula Vogel. 

Since New Stages’ inception, more than 80 plays have been produced as a developmental production or staged reading. More than 60% of all plays developed in New Stages have received a world premiere production at the Goodman or another leading U.S. theater. The 2018/2019 Season features five world premieres that originated in New Stages—We’re Only Alive For A Short Amount of Time by David Cale, Lady in Denmark by Dael Orlandersmith, How to Catch Creation by Christina Anderson, Twilight Bowl by Rebecca Gilman and Lottery Day by Ike Holter.

    Between Covers Playwright

    Sarah Schulman (Playwright, Between the Covers) Plays include Carson McCullers (Historically Inaccurate) and Manic Flight Reaction (Playwrights Horizons) and Enemies, A Love Story (adapted from Isaac Bashevis Singer’s Wilma).Works in development include Roe Versus Wade (New York Theatre Workshop), The Snow Queen (collaboration with Marianne Faithful) and SHIMMER (collaboration with composer Anthony Davis and lyricist Michael Korie). Schulman's 19 books include the novels Maggie TerryThe Cosmopolitans and the non-fiction work Conflict Is Not Abuse. Films include The Owls and Mommy is Coming (both directed by Cheryl Dunye), Jason and Shirley (director Stephen Winter) and United in Anger: A History of ACT UP (director Jim Hubbard.) She is a Guggenheim Fellow in playwriting.

    Birthday Candles Playwright

    Noah Haidle (PlaywrightBirthday Candles) has had two plays produced at the Goodman, Vigils and Smokefall. His most recent play, Everything Beautiful, premiered at the National Theater of Mannheim, Germany, where he is the writer-in-residence, a position first held by Friedrich Schiller. Currently a writer on Showtime’s Kidding, starring Jim Carrey and directed by Michel Gondry, Haidle’s episode, “The Cookie” will air in mid-October. A graduate of Princeton University and The Juilliard School, Haidle lives in Los Angeles with his wife, their three bunnies and their dog named Fun.

    Cressida on Top Playwright

    Paula Vogel (PlaywrightCressida on Top) is a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright whose plays include INDECENT (Tony Award Nomination for Best Play), How I Learned to Drive(Pulitzer Prize, Lortel Prize, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, OBIE and New York Drama Critics Awards for Best Play), The Long Christmas Ride Home, The Mineola Twins, The Baltimore Waltz, Hot 'N' Throbbing, Desdemona, And Baby Makes Seven, The Oldest ProfessionA Civil War Christmas and Don Juan Comes Home From Iraq.  Most recent awards include the American Theatre Hall of Fame Award, Dramatists Guild Lifetime Achievement Award, the Lilly Award, the Thornton Wilder Prize, the Obie Award for Lifetime Achievement and the NY Drama Critics Circle Award. She is honored to have three awards dedicated to emerging playwrights in her name: The American College Theatre Festival's Paula Vogel Award in Playwriting, the Paula Vogel Award given annually by the Vineyard Theatre and the Paula Vogel mentor’s award by Young Playwrights of Philadelphia.  Vogel’s plays are published in six volumes by TCG Press and she teaches playwriting workshops throughout the United States and abroad.     Felons & Familias Director

    Marcela Muñoz (Director, Felons & Familias) is an actress, director, teaching artist and translator of dramatic works. She is the co-artistic director and managing director of Aguijón Theater, Chicago’s longest-running Latinx theater company. Her stage acting and/or directing credits include works with Aguijón Theater, Teatro Luna, Teatro Vista, Victory Gardens Theater, Goodman Theatre, Urban Theater and Chicago Dramatists. As an actress and director, she has participated in international theater festivals in Peru, Argentina and Colombia. She is a graduate of The School at Steppenwolf and a 2017 3Arts Award winner.

    Felons & Familias Playwright

    Sandra Delgado (PlaywrightFelons & Familias) is a playwright and actor. Her play La Havana Madrid was developed as part of the Goodman's Playwrights Unit and the world premiere Teatro Vista production played to sold-out houses at both Steppenwolf Theatre Company and Goodman Theatre. Recent acting credits include Oedipus El Rey (The Public Theater/The Sol Project), 2666 (Goodman Theatre), The Motherf**ker with the Hat(Steppenwolf Theatre Company) and Mojada (Victory Gardens Theater). Delgado is an ensemble member of Collaboraction and Teatro Vista, is a resident playwright at Chicago Dramatists, a member of ALTA's Semillero Playwright's Circle and the MC-10 Playwrights Group. She is the recipient of the Joyce Award, The TCG Fox Foundation Resident Actor Fellowship, Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events grants, and a 3Arts 3AP Project Grant.     DANYA TAYMOR (DirectorGraveyard Shift) is a director and translator based in New York. Recent work includes Pass Over (Lincoln Center Theater, Steppenwolf Theatre Company); queens (Lincoln Center Theater); Esai’s Table (Cherry Lane Theater); Everybody (The Juilliard School); The Sensuality Party (The New Group); Wyoming (Lesser America); My Daughter Keeps Our Hammer, The Place We Built, I Hate Fucking Mexicans (The Flea; co-translation); Flat Sam (PlayPenn). Her production of Antoinette Nwandu’s Pass Over was filmed by Spike Lee and premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival. Taymor is an alumna of the Women’s Project Lab, Sundance Theatre Lab, Lincoln Center Theater Directors Lab, Van Lier Fellowship and the 2050 Fellowship at New York Theatre Workshop. She is a Usual Suspect at New York Theatre Workshop, an artist in residence at Theatre for a New Audience, a member of Ensemble Studio Theatre and an associate artist at The Flea. Upcoming work includes Familiar (Steppenwolf Theatre Company) and Daddy (Vineyard Theatre/The New Group). Television credits include Chicago P.D., Crisis, Bobby & Iza, Sirens and Battleground.

    Graveyard Shift Playwright

    Korde Arrington Tuttle (Playwright, Graveyard Shift) is a resident artist at Lincoln Center Theater, Ars Nova and Middle Voice Apprentice Theater Company at Rattlestick Playwrights Theatre. He is the 2018 recipient of the New York Stage and Film Company Founders’ Award, the 2018 Jody Falco and Jeffrey Steinman Commission for Emerging Playwrights Award at Playwrights Horizons and the 2018 Playwrights Initiative Fellowship at the Djerassi Resident Artists Program. Tuttle was also selected as a finalist for both the 2017 Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition and the City Theatre National Award for Short Playwriting. He is from Charlotte, North Carolina and a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Tuttle received his MFA in playwriting at The New School.

    New Stages Curator

    Tanya Palmer is the director of new play development at Goodman Theatre, where she coordinates New Stages, the theater’s new play program, and has served as the production dramaturg on a number of plays including the world premieres of Vigils by Noah Haidle, Magnolia by Regina Taylor, The Long Red Road by Brett C. Leonard and the Pulitzer Prize–winning Ruined by Lynn Nottage. Prior to her arrival in Chicago, she served as the director of new play development at Actors Theatre of Louisville, where she led the reading and selection process for the Humana Festival of New American Plays. She is the co-editor, with Amy Wegener and Adrien-Alice Hansel, of four collections of Humana Festival plays, published by Smith & Kraus, as well as two collections of 10-minute plays published by Samuel French. Originally from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, she holds an MFA in playwriting from York University in Toronto.

    The Wizards Playwright

    Ricardo Gamboa (PlaywrightThe Wizards) is an artist, activist and academic creating radically politicized work. In Chicago, Gamboa is a member of Free Street Theater. In New York City, they are an alumni of the EmergeNYC program at Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics and the New York Neo-Futurists. Their current projects include the underground news show The Hoodoisie, the community-based theater piece Meet Juan(ito) Doe and BRUJOS, the web series about four gay Latino graduates who are also witches. Gamboa has won several awards including a Joyce Award and an International Connections Award from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. They are completing their doctorate degree at New York University in the American studies progam and received their MA in arts politics from the The New York University Tisch School of the Arts.

    There's Always the Hudson Director

    Jess McLeod (Director, There’s Always the Hudson) returns to the Goodman, where she previously directed the How To Catch Creation staged reading for the 2017 New StagesFestival and was the recipient of the 2016/2017 Michael Maggio Directing Fellowship. Chicago credits include work with Lyric Unlimited/Lyric Opera of Chicago, Victory Gardens Theater, Chicago Shakespeare Theater, The Gift Theatre, Porchlight Music Theatre, Strawdog Theatre Company, Haven Theatre, The House Theatre of Chicago, Steppenwolf Theatre Company NEXT UP, A Red Orchid Theatre and Northlight Theatre. New York credits include work by Joyce Carol Oates, Rachel Axler, Harrison David Rivers and The Unauthorized Musicology of Ben Folds at the New York Musical Theatre Festival, where she served as director of programming from 2005-2008. McLeod obtained an MFA from Northwestern University and currently serves as the resident director of Broadway in Chicago’s Hamilton.

    There's Always the Hudson Playwright

    Paola Lázaro-Muñoz (Playwright, There’s Always the Hudson) is a playwright and actress from San Juan, Puerto Rico. In 2017, her play Tell Hector I Miss Him (Atlantic Theater Company) was nominated for a Drama League Award for Best Production of a Broadway or Off-Broadway Play, and was also nominated for an Outer Critics Circle Award for the John Gassner Playwriting Award. She has a two-year Playwright Residency at The Public Theater and is a Sundance Institute Time Warner Foundation Storytelling Fellow. Off-Broadway acting credits include Our Lady of 121stStreet (Signature Theatre) and To the Bone (Cherry Lane Theatre).
