MAT SMART (Playwright; Eden Prairie, 1971) is a native of Naperville and currently lives in Manhattan. Upcoming world premieres include Kill Local at the La Jolla Playhouse, directed by Jackson Gay and The Agitators: The Story of Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass at Geva Theatre Center, directed by Logan Vaughn. Other plays include The Royal Society of Antarctica (premiere at the Gift Theatre in Chicago, recipient of the 2015 Jeff Award for Best New Work; upcoming at Stage Theatre in Ft. Worth), Samuel J. and K. (Williamstown Theatre Festival and Steppenwolf for Young Adults), The Hopper Collection (The Magic Theatre and Huntington Theatre Company), Tinker to Evers to Chance (Geva Theatre Center and Merrimack Repertory Theatre), The 13th of Paris (City Theatre and Seattle Public Theater) and Naperville (Slant Theatre Project and Theatre Wit). He has received two Jerome Fellowships, a McKnight Advancement Grant, two Edgerton Foundation New Play Awards and was the recipient of the 2014 Otis Guernsey New Voices Award from the William Inge Center for the Arts.
