Fannie Lou Hamer, Speak On It! Campaign

From Englewood to North Lawndale to Portage Park, in an unprecedented collaboration with Chicago Park District’s Night Out in the Parks, Goodman Theatre presents Cheryl L. West’s electrifying call-to-action—Fannie Lou Hamer, Speak On It!—in a FREE three-week, nine-location outdoor engagement.

This one-woman show tells the true story of civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer and her struggle to bring voting rights to African Americans in 1950’s Mississippi. Starring celebrated actor E. Faye Butler and featuring gospel music, Fannie Lou Hamer, Speak On It! will inspire audiences to take action and make their voices heard!

To help cover the costs of bringing this production to our communities free of charge, we gratefully ask for your support in the form of a charitable contribution. Donors in support of Fannie Lou Hamer, Speak On It! will have their gifts matched 1:1 up to $5,000 by a generous Goodman Trustee.

Fannie Lou Hamer once said, “When I liberate myself, I liberate others. If you don't speak out ain't nobody going to speak out for you.” Help Goodman Theatre to share Fannie Lou Hamer’s story and encourage everyday Chicagoans to speak out!
