Goodman Theatre is proud to join citywide celebrations of Black History Month with the 4-part series Black Words Matter: Celebrating Black Voices On Stage and Beyond. Join us for engaging, community-driven programming that emphasizes the Goodman’s three guiding principles—Quality, Diversity and Community.

  • Weaving Our Stories: A Community Read-In and Viewing

    Tuesday, February 7 | 2pm
    DuSable Museum of African American History | 740 East 56th Place

    In partnership with the DuSable Museum of African American History, the Goodman presents a community read-in of the play Gee’s Bend by Elyzabeth Gregory Wilder, which focuses on the turbulence of 20th century race relations and the real-life quilting community of Gee’s Bend, Alabama. The reading is presented alongside DuSable’s featured exhibit “Unpacking Collections: The Legacy of Cuesta Benberry, an African American Quilt Scholar.”


  • Film Screening: The Piano Lesson

    Join us for a special screening of the film adaptation of August Wilson’s The Piano Lesson (1995) with an introduction by artist and scholar Ron OJ Parson. This screening is presented in partnership with AMC Dine-In Theatres Block 37.


  • Chuck Smith Lecture Series: Playwrights from Past to Present

    Goodman Artistic Collective member Chuck Smith, Harvey Young and Goodman playwrights discuss Black theater in Chicago and the post-August Wilson generation of writers. Please note an American Sign Language interpreter will be present for this lecture providing interpretation services.
