The Goodman Playwrights Unit is a season-long residency program for Chicago-area playwrights. Established in 2010, the program invites four playwrights to meet bi-monthly with the Goodman’s literary staff to develop a new play. The playwrights are given a modest commission fee, and in addition to the bi-monthly meetings, the playwrights are offered a mid-point reading at Chicago Dramatists. The residency culminates in a final public reading at the Goodman at the end of the season. Playwrights are also invited to all Goodman Theatre opening nights, as well as selected meetings, rehearsals and special events.
Eligibility: Playwrights must live in the Chicagoland area during the Goodman’s 2018/2019 Season and have had at least one fully produced play (academic productions are eligible). Current or former members of the Playwrights Unit are not eligible to reapply.
Please submit the following to firstname.lastname@example.org:
- A statement (approximately 500 words) explaining why you are interested in participating in the Goodman’s Playwrights Unit and the new play you would propose to develop during your time here. Extant plays proposed for further development will not be considered.
- A professional resume outlining your plays written and produced and any other related experience.
- A 20 page sample of a full-length play written in the last year or two that you feel best reflects your voice and interests as a playwright. If you are selected as a finalist, we will request the full manuscript.
Deadline: June 19, 2018
Selections will be made by late summer.
