"The arts help bring the people of our city together, and that’s why it’s so important to support and participate in cultural events such as the Goodman’s Latino Theatre Festival, and the ‘Year of Mexico’ in Chicago. I am proud to be the mayor of a city that promotes cultural awareness and appreciation. In Chicago we embrace our diversity and realize that our differences are a cause for celebration and not isolation.
-Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley

The Sins of Sor Juana

Top

Presented by Goodman Theatre (Chicago)
By Karen Zacarías
Directed by Henry Godinez
Featuring Tony Plana and Malaya Rivera Drew
June 19 - July 25 | Albert Theatre | In English

One year before her death, legendary seventeenth-century Mexican poet Juana Inés de la Cruz vowed, in a message scrawled in blood, “I will never write again.” In this vibrant and sensual play, writer Karen Zacarías explores the mysteries and rumors surrounding Juana's dramatic vow. Beginning in the convent where she ended her days, the play travels back in time to the colorful world of the viceroy’s court where 16-year-old Juana writes expressive verse at a time when it was unfashionable—and sinful—for women to exercise their intellect. What follows is a tale of love and betrayal in which Juana is forced to choose between the power of the pen, and the perils of the heart.
