  • I saw The Jungle Book on Saturday July 6th. The show has a lot to like. The cast and band are excellent. The scenic design is enticing. It is certainly entertaining. I would say that the story needs more focus should this show continue on to other productions. Some new songs need to be written. The show doesnt really take off until Baloo the bear comes on the scene and sings The Bare Necessities. The boy (who is the focus of the story) is overshadowed by all the other colorful characters. He has no solo that tells how he feels about things. Imagine if Dorothy never sang Over the Rainbow in The Wizard of Oz. The 'I Wanna Be Like You' number is really fun, but needs to be trimmed. The ending of the number goes on too long and is a bit self indulgent. The tiger needs to be seen more frequently. He appears briefly at the very beginning of act one. The other characters refer to him all the time, but you never see him again until into act two. The finale is very confusing. Is it a curtain call or is it another number? The cast sings in a random order so the audience is confused. Were we supposed to applaud or just let the number play out? With the haphazard order in which the performers appear (principle characters appear before supporting characters) the audience is never clear on if they should be applauding while performers are trying to sing. This is especially problematic as the finale is a new song which has not been heard before so it would be nice to be able to hear the lyrics. All in all, it was an enjoyable production well worth seeing, but I have seen better at the Goodman.
