Benjamin Mordecai

Benjamin Mordecai (1945-2005) was represented on Broadway by David Henry Hwang’s new adaptation of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Flower Drum Song and the revival of August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. In addition, he produced David Henry Hwang’s Golden Child; Au­gust Wilson’s King Hedley II and Seven Guitars; Anna Deavere Smith’s Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992; and served as Executive Producer of Angels in America. He was producer of 17 Broadway productions, 15 of which were nominated for the Tony Award. Mr. Mordecai was As­sociate Dean of the Yale School of Drama, and served as managing director of the Yale Repertory Theatre from 1982 to 1993. Mr. Mordecai received numerous awards in­cluding four Tonys, two NAACP Theatre Awards and the Robert Whitehead Award for outstanding commercial pro­ducing.
