In Hasta los gorriones dejan su nido, inspired by Tennessee William's one-act play The Strangest Kind of Romance (1942), Chicago-based playwright Raul Dorantes illustrates the struggles faced by many immigrants trying to build good lives in a foreign land: racism, loneliness and the fear of being cut off from one's roots. Just as Williams highlights the economic insecurity of the transient laborer in his Depression-era piece, Dorantes explores the harsh challenges facing today's undocumented migrant worker.

Barcelona's legendary, award-winning dancer, choreographer and performance artist Marta Carrasco presents the most sensational pieces from the last 10 years of her remarkable stage career in one spectacular piece, J'arrive, an exhilarating expression of obsession and seduction. "For me," says Carrasco, "making or creating a show has never been a question of will, nor of intellectual decision, but rather one of necessity, of passion, and most of all, obsession."

"What enters by the ear and moves the heart?" is the question posed by the creators of the Spanish-language puppet piece, De La Oreja Al Corazon. The answer is music, as a young orphan boy discovers in this beautifully designed, touching and imaginative celebration of artistic inspiration. When Julian, a lonely orphan, discovers a talent for music, he is taken under the wing of kindly old Don Pepe Ojeda, who believes that music is a magical force that can change any life. With the help of his new friend, Julian follows his dream of becoming a conductor and touches the lives of everyone around him through the transformative power of music.

La respuesta es...música, como cuando un niño que era pequeño y huérfano descubre su inspiración en esta hermosa celebración artística, emotiva y hermosamente diseñada puesta en escena. Cuando Julián, un huérfano solitario, descubre su talento por la música, es tomado bajo el cuidado del bondadoso Don Pepe Ojeda, quien cree que la música en una fuerza mágica que puede ayudar a cambiar la vida. Con la ayuda de su nuevo amigo, Julián persigue su sueño de convertirse en un director de orquesta y así poder llegar a las vidas de todos aquellos a su alrededor por medio del poder que tiene para transformar con la música.

Nuestro Papá esta en Atlantis es una divertida y tierna historia de dos hermanos jóvenes que fueron dejados en México por su papá viudo, y quien se fue a los Estados Unidos en busca de trabajo. Al cuidado de familiares que apenas conocían, los jóvenes son forzados a apoyarse en el uno al otro para apoyo emocional y físico. Su corta experiencia y prematura independencia los lleva al ingenuo intento de navegar la inalcanzable distancia entre ellos y su padre quien al parecer se ha olvidado de ellos.

UrbanTheater Chicago's (UTC) performance, directed by Jeff Award-winner Nikkieli DeMone, includes excepts from previous UTC shows, including Miguel Pinéro's Short Eyes, The Sun Always Shines for the Cool and Eulogy for a Small Time Thief and Elizabeth Swados' Runaways. UTC will also perform scenes from The King of Cans by famed Nuyorican poet and playwright Tato Laviera. Batey Urbano, youth-run community center in Humboldt Park, will perform spoken-word selections, including Bandera a Bandera by Tato Laviera and scenes from Crimes Against Humanity by Michael Reyes.

Live Music on Friday Nights

Every Friday night during the Latino Theatre Festival when the shows are over, the music and dancing will begin! A different band will take the lobby stage on each of three Friday nights, with The Luna Blues Machine (Aug. 15) already scheduled to perform. This event is free and no reservations are required.

Tarima Son will be performing on Friday, August 8.
