((February 20, 2009 - Chicago, IL) The Broadway transfer of Goodman Theatre's critically-acclaimed production of Desire Under the Elms, directed by Robert Falls, is set to begin preview performances April 14 at the St. James Theatre (246 W. 44th Street) in a 13-week limited engagement; opening date is April 27. The New York production features the original Chicago cast of stage and screen stars Brian Dennehy (Goodman's Death of a Salesman, Long Day's Journey Into Night), Carla Gugino (Entourage, Spy Kids, Sin City) Pablo Schreiber (Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Awake and Sing!), Boris McGiver (The Wire) and Daniel Stewart Sherman (Broadway's Cyrano de Bergerac). The design team is Walt Spangler (set); Ana Kuzmanic (costumes); Michael Philippi (lighting) and Richard Woodbury (original music and sound). Jeffrey Richards, Jerry Frankel and Steve Traxler produce.
Falls' bold revival of Desire Under the Elms was hailed an "operatically scaled production (that) honors O'Neill's mighty ambition" (The New York Times); "innovative...(not) your typical O'Neill" (Entertainment Weekly); "colossal, unabashedly sexual" (Chicago Tribune); and "enthralling…you will not soon forget this thunderous production" (Chicago Sun-Times). The production runs through March 1 at the Goodman as the centerpiece of the Falls-curated landmark theatrical event, "A Global Exploration: Eugene O'Neill in the 21st Century." Casting note: Amy J. Carle replaces Carla Gugino for all remaining performances in Chicago.
